What is the difference between monofilament leader and fluorocarbon leader?:

Refractive index / visibility
Fluorocarbon has a refractive index much closer to water than nylon monofilament does, which makes it significantly less visible underwater. This is the main reason it's favored for leaders and tippet on pressured fish or clear water.

Density
Fluorocarbon is denser than water and sinks. Monofilament is roughly neutral to slightly buoyant and floats or sits in the film. This makes mono the natural choice for dry fly leaders (keeps things floating), and fluoro the natural choice for nymphing and streamers (helps get flies down faster, no mending drag from a floating leader).

Abrasion resistance and stiffness
Fluorocarbon is generally more abrasion-resistant and stiffer than mono of the same diameter — useful around rocks, structure, or toothy fish. The stiffness also means less supple presentation, which can matter for delicate dry fly work where mono's suppleness gives better drag-free drifts.

Stretch and shock strength
Monofilament has more stretch, which acts as a shock absorber on strikes and hard runs — a plus for setting hooks on softer takes or when using light tippet. Fluorocarbon has less stretch, meaning more direct hook sets but also less forgiveness on sudden shocks (a factor in break-offs on light tippet).

UV resistance and lifespan
Fluorocarbon holds up better to UV degradation over time. Mono breaks down faster with sun exposure and generally needs replacing more often.

Knot strength
Mono is usually a bit more forgiving to tie knots in and holds knots slightly better; fluorocarbon can be less forgiving of knots and needs extra care (proper lubrication, cinching) to reach full strength.
